Hastelloy C22

Hastelloy C22, also known as Alloy C22 is very similar to Hastelloy C276 and has good heat resistance and corrosion resistance. This material has resistance to pitting, stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion.

Both Hastelloy C22 and C276 are used in pollution control, chemical processing, waste treatment and seawater applications. There is little difference between the two alloys in corrosion resistance ability except for one process: Hastelloy C22 shows an improvement over Hastelloy C276 when it is used in certain saturated wet chlorine environments. However, C276 is used more due to supply and availability.

Hastelloy C22 has better overall corrosion resistance than other nickel based alloys available today, including Hastelloy C276 and Hastelloy C4 alloy and Inconel 625. C22 contains 22% chromium, whereas C276 contains 16%, which is one factor contributing to C22 improved performance.

MP35N Alloy

MP35N alloy is a non-magnetic, nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy with a unique combination of ultrahigh tensile strength (up to 300 ksi [2068 MPa]), good ductility and toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance. In addition, this alloy displays exceptional resistance to sulfidation, high temperature oxidation, and hydrogen embrittlement. In seawater environments, this alloy is immune to general, crevice and stress corrosion.

MP35N resists corrosion in chloride solutions such as hydrogen sulfide, salt water, and also mineral acids.

The unique properties of MP35N alloy are developed through work hardening, phase transformation and aging. If the alloy is used in the fully work hardened condition, service temperatures up to 750°F (399°C) are suggested.

H13 Tool Steel

 

H13 Tool Steel is a versatile chromium-molybdenum hot work steel has good thermal shock resistance and thermal fatigue cracking. H14 is able to handle some water cooling while in service. H13 ESR (electroslag remelting) has greater homogeneity and superior fine structure, which leads to improved machinability, polishability and high temperature tensile strength.  Alloy H13 has high hardenability, excellent wear resistance and hot toughness.

422 Stainless Steel

 

Stainless Steel Grade 422 is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel which is being widely used for high temperatures up to 1200°F. It has excellent creep-rupture properties in the range of 600/1200°F and is capable of being heat treated to various high strength levels depending on section, form, and application involved.

316LVM Stainless Steel

 

316LVM F-138 is regarded as the ‘Medical Stainless Steel Grade’. This stainless steel 316 Vacuum Arc-Remelted (VAR) to achieve the extremely high levels of purity and ‘cleanliness’ required for surgical implants. It has excellent resistance in physiological environments, to general and intergranular corrosion, to pitting and crevice corrosion.

The ASTM F138 specification signifies implant grade. It is mainly used for permanent implants. 316LVM corrosion resistance is improved by a reduced carbon content compared to the 300 series alloy grades.

316/316L Dual Grade Stainless

 

Grade 316 Stainless Steel  is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grades 302 and 304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. It has excellent forming and welding characteristics. It is readily brake or roll formed into parts for applications in the industrial, architectural, and transportation fields. Grade 316 also has outstanding welding characteristics.

Grade 316L is low carbon version of 316 and is immune from sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation) so it can be used in heavy gauge welded components (over about 6mm).

Grade 316H has a higher carbon content and is used at elevated temperatures, as does stabilized grade 316Ti.

The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.

304 Condition A Stainless Steel

 

Stainless grade 304 is produced in various carbon levels. We stock T304, T304L (low carbon) and T304H (high carbon) in a wide range of gauges and finishes. We also stock 304/304L Dual Certified.

304L has a maximum carbon content of .03%. 304H has a carbon content between .04% and .08%

Grade 304 is the standard “18-8” stainless. It is the most versatile and most widely used stainless steel, available in a wider range of products, forms (bar, sheet, plate, tube, coil, etc.) and finishes (Pump shaft quality “PSQ”, Centerless Ground, 2B, etc), than any other. It has excellent forming and welding characteristics. The balanced austenitic structure of Grade 304 enables it to be severely deep drawn without intermediate annealing, which has made this grade dominant in the manufacture of drawn stainless parts such as sinks, hollow-ware and saucepans, handlebar, hooks, and chains. Grade 304 is readily brake or roll formed into a variety of components for applications in the industrial, architectural, and transportation fields. It also has outstanding welding characteristics. Post-weld annealing is not required when welding thin sections.Grade 304L, the low carbon version of 304, does not require post-weld annealing and so is extensively used in heavy gauge components (over about 6mm).

Grade 304H with its higher carbon content finds application at elevated temperatures. The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.

These properties are specified for ASTM A240/A240M. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products such as pipe and bar in their respective specifications.

Grade 304 cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

303 Stainless steel

 

Stainless steel grade 303 is the most readily machineable of all the austenitic grades of stainless steel.

Type 303 has mechanical properties that are comparable to both 304 and 316 stainless. The primary reason to use 303 is when you need a stainless steel with machining capabilites better than that of 304 and 316. It has roughly the same corrosion resistance as 304, but not as good as 316. The main drawback with the alloy is that it is not generally considered to be weldable. This material is hardenable by cold work.

The machineable nature of Grade 303 stainless steel is due to the presence of Sulphur in the steels composition. While the Sulphur improves machining, it also causes a decrease in the corrosion resistance and a slight lowering of the toughness. The corrosion resistance of grade 303 stainless steel is lower than that for 304. The toughness is still excellent as with other austenitic grades.

Property data given in this document is typical for bar products covered by ASTM A582. It is reasonable to expect specifications in these standards to be similar but not necessarily identical to those given in this article.

Sulphur is an addition to the composition act as initiation sites for pitting corrosion. This decreases the corrosion resistance of grade 303 stainless steel to less than that for 304. However corrosion resistance remains good in mild environments.

In chloride containing environments over 60°C, grade 303 stainless steel is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion. Grade 303 stainless is not suitable for use in marine environments.

Grade 303 stainless steel has good resistance to oxidation when intermittently exposed to temperature up to 760°C temperatures. It also has good oxidation resistance in continuous service to 870°C. This, however, is not recommended as 303 is sensitive to carbide precipitation with continuous use at 425-860°C.

Fabrication of all stainless steels should be done only with tools dedicated to stainless steel materials. Tooling and work surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned before each use, as this is necessary to avoid cross contamination of stainless steel.

Type 303 is not readily cold workable but it has excellent machinability.

17-4 Annealed (Type 630)

 

17-4 stainless steel ( Grade 630 )  is an age-hardening martensitic alloy combining high strength with the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Hardening is achieved by a short-time, simple low-temperature treatment. Unlike conventional martensitic stainless steels, such as type 410, 17-4 stainless steel is quite weldable. Alloy A286

 

 

A286 is a precipitation age-hardening iron-nickel-chromium alloy that is one of the most popular and widely used of high temperature alloys. It maintains good strength with oxidation resistance at temperatures of up to 1300F. A286 is used in various components, such as aircraft and industrial gas turbines due to is high strength and superior fabrication. A286 is also very popular in offshore oil and gas industry where high levels of heat and stress are a factor.

The work hardening of A286 is equivalent to 310S Stainless, and cold working is possible at the same level.

A286 has superior corrosion resistance beyond the standard 304 and 304L. This does not change after the aging process.

A286 is harder to work with than 316 and 310 stainless, however A286 can still be cold-worked with positive results. However, compared with other high-temperature alloys A286 is much easier to machine.

2011 Aluminum Alcoa

Alcoa 2011, a cold finished aluminum wrought product, is suggested for applications requiring high productivity and excellent machinability. It is the most free-machining of all aluminum alloys due to the additions of lead and bismuth. Typical applications include auto fuel system componentry, clock parts, gears, machine parts, pipe stems, TV fittings, camera parts, meter shafts, ordnance, industrial connectors, and speedometer components.

The -T3 temper is the choice when high productivity at moderate strength is key. The -T451 temper offers excellent deep hole drilling characteristics at a lower strength level. When higher strength is required, -T8 temper is the preferred choice.

Alcoa 2011 offers excellent machinability with high productivity when machined using single-point or multi-spindle carbide tools on screw machines. The use of a chip breaker is not necessary in most cases. Being the most free-machining of all aluminum screw machine stock alloys, Toolrite 2011® is rated “A” giving very small broken chips and excellent surface finish on the final machined part. Machined finishes in the range of 5 to 10 microinches have been obtained in some applications using carbide tools.

The properties listed in this Alloy Data Sheet represent the best current information for this alloy. In each specific application, the user is expected to evaluate and test the alloy, temper and finishing method. H-11 Tool Steel

H-11 tool steel is a hot work steel that is represented by its excellent impact toughness. It consists of less vanadium than the commonly used H13 hot work tool steel. This gives it the higher toughness, with some reduction in wear resistance and temper resistance. H11 is a deep-hardening, air-hardening steel that gives minimal size change during heat treatment. It also has super resistance to thermal fatigue cracking (heat checking) and superb resistance to gross cracking and thermal shock when water cooled in service. Experts will recommend H11 for hot tooling applications where maximum resistance to cracking is required.

D2 Tool Steel is has become the tool and die standard to compare against other tool steels. It has relatively high attainable hardness and an abundant and large, chromium-rich alloy carbides in the microstructure. Stainless 303se (Selenium)

303Se Stainless Steel is a free machining 18-8 chrome-nickel steel. Selenium, added to an 18-8 stainless steel that is tough and difficult to machine, makes it so easily and freely machinable that it can be readily be handled on automatic screw machines. It can be machined at about 75% of the speed of carbon C1212. This material has displayed nongalling properties that make disassembly of parts easy and help to avoid scratching or galling in its moving parts.

Type 303Se has somewhat better formability than Stainless Type 303 and should be considered for applications which involve cold-forming operations.

Type 303Se can been used for parts that are fabricated by machining, grinding and polishing. For example, all types of screw machine products, valves, valve trim, etc. However, it is not recommended for vessels containing gases or liquids under high pressure.

Stainless Type 303Se is resistant to atmospheric corrosion, foodstuffs, sterilizing solutions, many organic chemicals and dyestuffs, and a wide variety of inorganic chemicals.

Intergranular corrosion may be a problem if the material is heated between 800ºF (427ºC) and 1650ºF (899ºC) or cooled slowly through that range.

For optimum corrosion resistance, surfaces must be free of scale, lubricants, foreign particles, and coatings applied for drawing and heading. After fabrication of parts, cleaning and/or passivation should be considered.

Titanium 6Al-4V Grade 5

Titanium 6Al-4V Grade 5 UNS R56400

Ti 6Al-4V titanium is used the most of all alpha-beta titanium alloys. It is usually used in the annealed condition, at service temperatures up to 750°F. However it can be heat treated to gain high strength under 4″ thick. Hardenability is limited in sizes over 1″ and may not develop full properties. Ti 6Al-4V can be welded with matching or with an ELI filler wire.

Ti 6Al-4V is generally resistant to corrosion even though it still may be quickly attacked by environments that cause breakdown of the protective oxide. These include hydrofluoric (HF), hydrochloric (HCl), sulfuric and phosphoric acids. Inhibitors are know to reduce this for all but hydrofluoric. Ti 6Al-4V resists attack by pure hydrocarbons, and most chlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons.

Ti 6Al-4V can have chloride stress corrosion cracking (known as SCC) in some conditions, although it is known to be among the better of the titanium alloys in this regard. Generally silver plated bolts are not used with Ti 6Al-4V as silver bonds easily with chlorine. Ti 6Al-4V is also susceptible to SCC in environments such as methyl alcohol, red fuming HNO3, and N2O4. In the case of red fuming nitric acid, SCC is limited to environments containing less than 1.5% water, or more than 6% NO2. Failure in N2O4 has occurred when oxygen and chlorides were present as impurities.

Titanium 6Al-4V Eli Grade 23

 

Ti 6Al-4V Eli is one of the most commonly used titanium alloy. Neither this or Ti-6Al has corrosion properties quite as good as CP titanium but both of these grades are corrosion resistant to be used in seawater and oxidizing acids.

6AL-4V ELI is certified to ASTM F136 and is generally known as implant grade 6-4 Titanium. It is well suited for implants and medical devices due its properties of biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, high strength and toughness.

The main difference between Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23) and Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) is that in ELI (Extra Low Interstitials) the maximum oxygen content is lowered to .13% which gives the material an improved toughness.

This material is low interstitial version of Ti-6Al-4V, for maximum toughness. This grade is normally used in the annealed condition.

Stress relief 900-1200°F 1 to 4 hours, air cool. Duplex anneal, bar and forgings: Solution anneal 50-100°F below the beta transus, hold 1 hour minimum, air cool. Then reheat within the range 1300-1400°F, hold 1 hour minimum, air cool. Stress – relief annealing is performed after welding.

Hastelloy C276 is a solid solution strengthened nickel based alloy with a small amount of tungsten. C276 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a number of harsh environments. Industries where C276 are used in are power generation, petrochemical and chemical processing, pharmaceutical, pulp production, paper production and waste treatment.

Titanium Ti-3Al-2.5V Grade 9 UNS R56320

Also known as 3-2.5 Ti, this grade provides exceptional corrosion resistance to many harsh elements, such as seawater environments, salts and oxidizing acids. Grade 9 alloy is known for its weldability and formability, whether it be hot or cold.  This grade is a compromise between the ease of welding and manufacturing of the “pure” grades and the high strength of Grade 5.

This material is available in two conditions, annealed and cold worked stress relieved. Annealed has a lower tensile strength than CWSR, but has better forming capabilities. CWSR is stronger, but does not form as well as annealed.

Ti03Al-2.5V is an ideal material for applications such as aircraft and hydraulic system tubing due to its extreme lightweight. Other uses are for the manufacturing of sports equipment (tennis rackets, bicycles and golf clubs).

Stellite® 1

 

Stellite® 1 is a hardfacing alloy that possesses excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance. Stellite® 1 keeps its hardness at temperatures above 760C (1400F).

This material contains a high proportion of hard, wear resistant primary carbides. This alloy is well suited to applications involving extreme low=angle erosion and severe abrasion. Stellite® 1 is more crack sensitive than the other Stellite® grades. One should be careful to minimize the cooling stresses experienced during casting and hardfacing processing.

Stellite® 3

 

Stellite® 3 has a high carbon content which increased the volume fraction of carbides. Due to this, it has high abrasion and solid particle erosion resistance. Stellite® 3 also has a high tungsten content which improves its high temperature properties.

This alloy is generally considered inferior to Stellite® alloys 6 and 12 in most environments. However it has excellent resistance to oxidation like all the Stellite® alloys. It is 3 to 4 times are resistance than Stellite® alloy 6 and twice as resistance as Stellite® alloy 12.

Stellite® 6

 

Stellite® 6 is a cobalt based alloy that consists of complex carbides in an alloy matrix. As discussed, cobalt is resistant to wear, galling and corrosion at high temperatures. Stellite® 6 is the most widely used of wear resistant cobalt-based alloys and exhibits good performance. It is industry standard for general purpose wear resistance applications, and has excellent resistance to many forms of mechanical and chemical degradation.  This material also remains at a high level of hardness up to 500C. Type 304H is the high carbon version of 304 and 304L. T304H (high carbon) in a wide range of gauges and finishes. Type 304H has a carbon content between .04% and .10%

Grade 304H with its higher carbon content finds application at elevated temperatures. The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.

It is common for certifications of Grade 304H to be dual certified as 304/304H when the material has a higher carbon content.

Inconel Alloy 825 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy that contains small amounts of molybdenum, titanium and copper. Inconel 825 has great resistance to many corrosive environments, including pitting, crevice corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking.

Inconel 825 also has good mechanical properties from moderate to high temperatures.

Alloy 825 is similiar to Alloy 800 although it has improve resistance to aqueous corrosion.

AL6XN is a type of weldable stainless steel that is a low carbon, high purity, nitrogen-bearing super austenitic nickel-molybdenum alloy with excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion.
