Stainless Grade 440C is a high-carbon chromium steel that was engineered to have stainless properties with maximum hardness. It is used mostly as a bearing steel and in the hardened and tempered condition. 440C can be heat treated but will have about a Rockwell 60 C scale, the hardest stainless steel.
440C has corrosion resistance in normal domestic environments and very mild industrial environments, including many petroleum products and organic materials.
