4140 alloy steel is a chromium molybdenum manganese alloy steel with good hardness penetration. 4140 has high fatigue strength, abrasion and impact resistance, toughness and torsional strength. This material was designed with consistent hardness and high strength.
4140 has good machinability in the annealed condition. It can also be welded using conventional techniques. Keep in mind that the mechanical properties of 4140 will be affected if its welded in the heat treated condition. So if you are going to weld it, heat treat it after welding.
